Public Safety and Facilities Announcements

Concern for our Neighbors

Dear Augsburg community,

As you are likely aware by now, there was a drive-by shooting at the Brian Coyle Center in our neighborhood last evening. The good news is that the two victims will recover from their wounds. The troubling fact is that this sort of violence continues to plague our neighborhood. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and all those in our community who are at fear for their well-being and safety.

Please know that we are working closely with fellow members of the Cedar-Riverside Partnership and with the Minneapolis Police Department to be of assistance in any way we can to respond to this incident and to work to ensure that our neighborhood is safe for all of us who live and work in Cedar-Riverside.

We are especially mindful of the members of our Augsburg community who are affected by this violent incident. Today, staff from Augsburg's departments of Public Safety, Student Services, Community Relations, Sabo Center and other areas of the College have been working directly with students who are involved at the center and in the neighborhood to address concerns and support them making individual choices about their future work. I hope that all of you will take advantage of on-campus resources to share any concerns or fears you may have.

This is our neighborhood and together with all of our neighbors we will work to ensure its welfare.

Paul C. Pribbenow
President

Teaching and Learning

Tutors Needed

We are currently looking for students interested in volunteering their time and talents by tutoring adults from the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. Tutoring will occur on Tuesdays-Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:30 in Foss.

We are looking for students from all scholarly disciplines to tutor. This is a great opportunity for students to meet adults in the community and to not only refine communication and teaching skills, but to engage with adults from a variety of ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds.

The Trinity-Augsburg Partnership (with the help of the Sabo Center and the Bonner Program) is making this program possible.

Please e-mail Elena Eveslage at eveslage@augsburg.edu if interested in tutoring.

Biology Faculty Candidate Seminar - THURSDAY

Biology Faculty candidate Dr. Phil Jensen will present: "Activin Signaling Links Diet and Metabolism during Drosophila Development"

How can animals adjust metabolism to diet? The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster increases its size over one hundred-fold during a five-day period of development, and this transformation occurs even when animals are grown on a variety of food sources. The fly, therefore, is an excellent model system for studying the balance of cellular metabolism and growth. This seminar will highlight a novel molecular signaling event that links two evolutionarily conserved signaling pathways - Activin signaling and insulin signaling - to integrate diet and metabolism during development of the fruit fly.

When: Thursday, January 27, 2011 from 4:15 - 5:15 p.m.
Where: Science Hall 123

(Please note that there will be one additional faculty candidate seminar on Thursday, February 3.)

Thru Another's Lens - Wednesday, February 2

The Department of Residence Life is continuing its safe dialogue series for community members on issues of human diversity. The overarching goals of this series are to help people understand each other across difference as well as inspire all to take action for positive social change.

The kick off to this series occurred on Wednesday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100. This first session looked to develop a common conceptual understanding of oppression dynamics, broadly, allowing the series to take single-issue focus for the rest of the academic year. Now, each session will focus on a particular social identity category while also considering how various oppression dynamics intersect (e.g., class, disability/nondisability, ethnicity, gender, race, religious & spiritual identity, sexual orientation). It is not required to have attended this session on Wednesday, November 3 to attend this or future sessions.

This third session in the series will take place on Wednesday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Oren Gateway 100 and will focus on race, racism, and ways to take action against racism in everyday life.

So, if you want to join a discussion where you will leave with some tangible takeaways that you can apply, then come join us!

If you have any questions, please contact Will O'Berry at oberry@augsburg.edu.

Free sunglasses as well as dessert will be provided for attendees!

Film, "Still Doing It," at WRC today at 12:30

Please join us today, January 26, in 207 Sverdrup from 12:30-1:30 for the first Brown Bag Lunch and Feminist Film of the Spring Semester. We will be showing STILL DOING IT: THE INTIMATE LIVES OF WOMEN OVER 60, a film that explores the lives of "nine extraordinary women, age 67-87, [who] express with startling honesty and humor how they feel about themselves, sex and love in later life." The filmmakers write: "Our intention is to reverse the widespread stereotypes about growing older and inspire all women to keep doing it - it being whatever turns them on - from following intellectual, political and artistic passions to finding romance and having great sex."

All are welcome!

Spring Brown Bag Lunches and Feminist Film Series 2011:

Lunches (207 Sverdrup):

Tuesday, Feb 15, 12-1: Sarah Griesse will talk with faculty and staff about the procedure for handling student reports of sexual assault.

Wed, March 23, 12:30-1:30 - An experiential session of mindfulness-based stress reduction with founder of Heartwood Mindfulness Practice Center, Judith Lies. Lies has been an instructor of mindfulness-based stress reduction in medical, mental health, professional, educational, religious, and corporate settings for 17 years. She completed the professional training with Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1993 and currently studies with Thich Nhat Hanh and his monks and nuns in France and the U.S.

Thurs, April 7, 12-1 (note date change) - John Zobitz will discuss Julie Des Jardin's book, _The Madame Curie Complex: The Hidden History of Women in Science_. (Des Jardin is a former Augsburg faculty member, now a historian at Baruch College, City University of New York.) The book "seeks to recover a neglected history of women who found entrée into science and engineering, exploring the barriers and choices they encountered, and the impact they made – or failed to make."

Films (Student Lounge, 4:30-6:30, unless otherwise noted):

February 18th: HIP HOP: BEYOND BEATS AND RHYMES
By self-proclaimed "hip-hop head" Byron Hurt, this is a "riveting documentary that tackles issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in today's hip-hop culture." The film "provides thoughtful insight from intelligent, divergent voices including rap artists, industry executives, rap fans and social critics from inside and outside the hip-hop generation. The film includes interviews with famous rappers such as Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D and Jadakiss and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons; along with commentary from Michael Eric Dyson, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Kevin Powell and Sarah Jones and interviews with young women at Spelman College, a historically black school and one of the nation's leading liberal arts institutions."

February 25th: SAY MY NAME
"Sisters, mothers, businesswomen, role models, music artists—in an industry dominated by men and noted for misogyny, the unstoppable female lyricists of SAY MY NAME speak candidly about class, race, and gender in pursuing their passions as female MCs. From hip hop's birthplace in the Bronx to the ladies of grime on London's eastside, emerging artists to world renowned stars like MC Lyte, Monie Love, Roxanne Shanté, Estelle, Erykah Badu and many more, these are women turning adversity into art."

March 2, Sateren, 7-10pm (this is not part of the Feminist Film Series): Augsburg's Native American Film Series brings us "Tracey Deer presents: CLUB NATIVE".
Hosted by professor and documentary filmmaker Jennifer Machiorlatti, this documentary "raises critical questions about belonging and indigenity, the heartbreak of 'marrying out' of the Mohawk Nation, and the unjust patriarchal laws that disenfranchise Native women. It is a candid and engrossing work about the pain, confusion, and frustration suffered by many First Nations women, but also a testament to the triumph of love and the resilience of the human spirit."

April 8: TEA & JUSTICE
"chronicles the experiences of three women who joined the New York Police Department during the 1980s—the first Asian women to become members of a force that was largely white and predominantly male."
