It's Not Too Late to Study Abroad over Winter Break

Join Professor Elise Marubbio in winter break to explore the contemporary issues faced by the indigenous people of Chiapas and their cultures by interacting with Indigenous people and organizations. Learn about different Indigenous cosmology and spirituality, sovereignty or autonomy, and Indigenous cooperatives, businesses, educational systems, and more. Back in Minneapolis, spend the rest of spring semester synthesizing what you learned.

DEADLINE EXTENDED until October 15!

Travel Dates: January 5-13, 2011 (course meets before travel and lasts all spring semester)

Book Orders Due October 15

Effective in 2010, the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) will require Augsburg to inform students about how they can save money on textbooks (including used books, cash back programs, etc.) Submitting your book orders promptly will help ensure our compliance to HEOA.

SUBMITTING TEXTBOOK REQUESTS
During registration, students must be able to access course information for fall. Registration begins in November, so it is imperative that we receive your Spring/Winter textbook adoption as soon as possible. Book request will be due in the store October 15th. We'll take your requests any way you want to deliver them! Choose the process that works best for you:

ONLINE REQUEST SYSTEM
This easy-to-use system gives you access to valuable information and timesaving features. You can learn what books were used over the past two years and select previously used textbooks just by checking a box, or you can enter information about a new book you want to use. You can also request additional supplies and materials needed for your course.

• Log in or register if you haven’t already.
• Follow Steps 1 through 5…..and you’re done!
• After you complete this process, you will receive an e-mail confirmation that your textbook request was received.

WHY THE EARLY REQUESTS?
Faculty members are often surprised how early we begin asking for textbook requests for the coming term. We need to know what textbooks you plan to use for a number of reasons:
• To manage publisher or shipping delays that may arise. If we know what textbooks you want to use early on, you'll have time to review alternatives if your preferred titles aren't available.
• To get textbooks in the students' hands for the first day of class and to help them be prepared. By working together, we can make sure not a moment of instructional time is lost.
• To help save our students money! Early requests help us secure used copies of textbooks. Used textbooks offer students a lower-priced alternative—typically 25% less than a new textbook.

FACULTY CENTER NETWORK (FCN)
Are you considering a new book for the coming term? The FCN makes textbook selection faster and easier. This free online resource provides you with the information and tools you need to quickly research, select, and request your textbooks. You can view lists of other titles published in your discipline using various search and sort criteria, see how frequently and at which schools different textbooks are being used, read peer reviews, and preview textbooks.

Once you've identified which textbooks you want to learn more about, you can examine each book's cover and table of contents. Some textbooks have excerpts and summaries. The FCN also contains a link that you can use to request desk copies from publishers.

Powerful Conversations on NSSE

Augsburg College uses the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to learn more about how our students perceive their college experience. Student engagement is strongly related to both student success and retention. This series of conversations is designed to help faculty and staff understand how well we engage students, explore how we can leverage our strengths to have a more significant impact, and examine what are our most important opportunities for improvement. Over the year, we will look at overall results and then look more closely at each of the five factors measured by NSSE. Every academic department should have a representative attend these sessions. They are scheduled as follows:

Department Scholarship Statement Review

As part of the ongoing, timely work to execute the newly revised Section 6 of the Faculty Handbook, members of the Committee on Disciplinary Standards of Scholarly Activity will convene meetings of faculty within their academic divisions next week. This committee has been given the charge of reviewing all department statements on scholarship for completeness and parity across disciplines, and to ensure that all department have submitted a statement.

Please note: next Wednesday's Faculty Meeting time slot will be used for the purpose of this work; there will be no Faculty Meeting in October.

Emergency Assistance for Guatemalans

Emergency Assistance for Guatemalans

The Park Avenue United Methodist Church invites donations to help Guatemalans victimized by excessive rain and mudslides in recent months. Generous donors could donate items like clothes and shoes for adults and children of all ages. There is great need for underwear and socks for children between ages 5 and 13. Toys are welcome too.

All donated items will be distributed in the most affected areas by church members in El Progreso Guastatoya, Zacapa y around Guatemala City.

Free Lockers Available for Students

Campus Activities and Orientation has a limited number of lockers that students can reserve for their use for the academic year. These lockers are completely free and are located on the ground floor of Science Building. Lockers are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, and priority is given to students who commute from off-campus. On Friday, 15 October, there are two related Homecoming events: The Augsburg authors' display and book-signing in the Student Gallery in Christensen, 4:30-6:30 pm, and a reading by guest author and alumnus Paul Kilgore '80 from his beautiful, new collection of short stories, _Losing Camille_, 4:45-5:30, in the Marshall Room.

Printmaker Jerald Krepps' new series is a visual response to the experiential beauty of change and life's temporal quality. Through the use of light, he creates images that explore our sensory relationships with the passage of time. Krepps is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota and teaches printmaking.

In his upcoming show "imPRINT", printmaker and Augsburg College professor Lynn Bollman explores what is and is not a print. By experimenting with unconventional surfaces and the process of printing, he invites the viewer to reevaluate the fine line between standard classifications of what things are and what they could be. Lynn Bollman is an Augsburg College alumnus ('67) and is also an art faculty member at Minneapolis Community Technical College.

• Homecoming 2010 will begin with a bang with a firework display following the Student Pep Rally in front of Kennedy Center. Bring your family and friends to campus to enjoy the impressive show put on for the enjoyment of students, faculty, staff, and alumni alike.

ASAC Concert
• Following the firework display, the most widely known and traveled band in America, the Johnny Holm Band will perform an unforgettable live musical experience for their fans at 8:30 p.m. on the Urness/Mort Lawn.

LGBTQIA faculty and staff are invited to a brown-bag lunch this Thursday, Oct 21 from 11-12 in the Women's Resource Center (207 Sverdrup). Topics to discuss: What conditions prevent faculty and staff from coming/being out? Should we feel compelled or obligated to come/be out on campus? If so, when and to whom?

Please note that this is not an event for allies but rather for any faculty or staff member who identifies as LGBTQIA, whether or not s/he is out.

Islamist Feminism TODAY 11-12 in East Commons

Please join our "Foundations in Women's Studies" class TODAY from 11-12 in the East Commons for Dr. Smadar Lavie's discussion of Islamist Feminism.

Lavie will explain the feminist failure to address religion due to religion's embeddedness in the patriarchal order. She will then review the history of Islamist feminism in Egypt, and its relationship with the forces of post-cold-war globalization and restructuring on the one hand, and with the historically secular feminist movement of Egypt, on the other. She will then explain the interplay between patriarchy, spirituality and desire in non-liberal societies.
