Batalden Program Conversation and Update

Join Ruth Enestvedt and Joe Underhill for an informal discussion of the work of the Batalden Program as part of our regular "First Wednesday Gathering." Ruth has served as the Batalden Faculty Scholar for the past two years and will give an overview of her work and Joe will be serving for the next two. Grab some food as part of the Community Lunch and join us in the Cedar Room from 11-12 on Wednesday, Oct. 6.

The work of the Batalden program in the next two years will involve collaborative efforts in experiential education focused on projects that fall under the broad category of applied ethics. Students, staff, faculty, and community groups are invited to join in discussion and implementation of projects that promote peace and justice, reduce our over-all ecological footprint and strengthen our ties with local community groups. These projects involve students doing applied research in relating to clean energy, water management, community-building, fair trade, alternative transportation, and peace and justice initiatives. Funds are available to support this work in various ways, including student research assistantships. Contact Prof. Underhill if you have other questions or ideas for projects at underhill@augsburg.edu.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Heroes and Heroines

Hispanic Heritage Month: Accomplishments, Heroes and Heroines

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to reflect on the lives of those who came before and after 1850. They were men and women of extraordinary courage, vision and purpose who opened the doors for other generations. During these days of remembrance, we need to pay tribute to all figures of Hispanic/Latino or Chicano ancestry whose lives and accomplishments should not be forgotten; especially of those working the land, factories or living a life with little recognition.

Like any immigrant group that has shaped mainstream American culture before fully asserting its economic or political contribution, Hispanics are getting settled in economically and academically as well as with their advances in the arts or in sports. Below a list of names offer a glance of achievers whose accomplishments, either from decades ago or recently, are worth mentioning due to how they changed or are improving our lives in this great United States of America today. Among them are:

• Mr. Luis W. Alvarez won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1968.
• Ms. Romana Acosta Banuelos the first Latina Treasurer of the United States in 1971.
• Ms. Ellen Lauri Ochoa became the first Hispanic women in space in 1993. She has since completed four flights, logging almost 1,000 hours in space.
• Mr. Jose Antonio Romualdo Pacheco was in 1875 an important figure in California politics. He remains the only Hispanic Governor of California.
• Mr. Esteban Bellan was the first Hispanic to play Major League Baseball, and among US's greatest. He became a successful manager in his native Cuba. He died in 1932.
• Mr. Cesar Chavez, a farm worker who became in the 1960s a figure in labor relations and civil rights. Eight states have declared his birthday, March 31, a public holiday.

In 2009, Hispanic magazine features six prominent Hispanics or Latinos, from a prize-winning writer to a university president. Here are four of them:
1. Mr. Michael Ramirez. In the span of 14 years he won two Pulitzer Prizes. He is today the senior editor and editorial cartoonist for Investor's Business Daily. "I want to be a catalyst to get people involved. I want to be a catalyst of thought," he says.
2. Ms. Deidre Connelly. Since 2005, Ms. Connelly has been president of Lilly USA, the world's 10th largest pharmaceutical company. She joined Lilly in 1984 as a sales representative in San Juan Puerto Rico. She attributes her success to good people.
3. Dr. Elsa A. Murano. In 2008, Dr. Murano took office as president of Texas A&M University, becoming the first Hispanic and the first woman to run the enormous university. "It's tremendous reflection of what is possible," she told the Houston Chronicle. A native of Cuba, Murano and her family left the island when she was 2 years old and resided in Latin America before settling in Miami.
4. Mr. Oscar Hijuelos. The first Latino ever to win a Pulitzer Prize in fiction. The Cuban-American scribe Oscar Hijuelos made waves with his novel The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, released in 1990. His contemporaries and many scholars credit Hijuelos with the commencement of a Latino literary renaissance.

In 2009, a TIME magazine's cover story features Judge Sonia Sotamayor with a headline that reads "Latina Justice." Indeed, she is an American story of courage and vision. Judge Sotamayor was raised by her mother, who worked two jobs after her father died. Though determined to succeed, she says she never imagined being nominated to the highest court. Today, she is a member of the highest court.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!!

Kociemba Earns All-MIAC in Men's Golf

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/10/4/mgolf100410.aspx?path=mgolf

COON RAPIDS, Minn. -- Joel Kociemba (SR, Andover, Minn./St. Francis HS) earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors with a three-day total of 227, leading the Augsburg College men's golf team to an eighth-place team finish at the MIAC championships, held over the weekend at Bunker Hills Golf Course.

One of just 11 golfers to have three rounds in the 70s in the three-day, 54-hole event, Kociemba finished with a 227 (75-75-77) total, good for ninth place in the 50-golfer event. After last year's 13th-place individual finish, Kociemba earned All-MIAC (top-10) honors for the first time in his career.

As a team, Augsburg finished eighth in the conference meet with a three-day total of 949 (316-317-316).

Brian Deuel (JR, Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and Zach Johnson (SO, Sartell, Minn.) tied for 29th with 239 totals, with Deuel shooting rounds of 80, 81 and 78, and Johnson shooting rounds of 78, 79 and 82.

Jason Henning (SR, Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Tucker Williams (JR, Roseville, Minn.) tied for 40th in the event with 248 totals, with Henning shooting rounds of 83, 82 and 83, and Williams shooting rounds of 83, 86 and 79.

Augsburg closes the fall half of the 2010-11 season at the Gustavus Twin Cities Classic next Saturday to Monday (10/9-11) at three Twin Cities courses -- the Elk River (Minn.) Country Club, the Links at Northfork in Ramsey, Minn., and the Wayzata (Minn.) Country Club.

Zappa Repeats as All-MIAC in Women's Golf

http://athletics.augsburg.edu/news/2010/10/4/wgolf100410.aspx?path=wgolf

COON RAPIDS, Minn. -- Stefani Zappa (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Patrick Henry HS) became the first Augsburg College women's golfer to earn multiple All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors, finishing seventh at the conference meet held over the weekend at the Bunker Hills Golf Course.

Competing in her final collegiate event, Zappa recorded the highest-ever finish for an Auggie at the MIAC championships, finishing seventh with a 250 (86-83-81) total, tying her school record set last year for best score in a 54-hole event. Her final round 81 on Monday was the seventh-best single-round score in school history.

Zappa's seventh-place finish is the fourth All-MIAC finish (top 10) for an Auggie women's golfer in school history and a one-place improvement over her eighth-place finish last year. Johanna Frykmark (SR, Taby, Sweden/Rollingby Gymnasium HS) finished 10th in 2007 and Andrea Sievert finished ninth in 1998.

With a 25th-place finish with a total of 271 (93-90-88) in her final collegiate meet, Frykmark joined Zappa as two of just three women's golfers in Augsburg history to record 25th-or-better finishes in three MIAC meets. Frykmark finished 10th in 2007 and 16th in 2009; Zappa finished 25th in 2008 before her eighth- and seventh-place finishes the past two years; and Marisa Navarro placed 15th in 2004, 12th in 2005 and 18th in 2006.

As a team, Augsburg finished seventh with a team total of 1,089 strokes (379-363-347). Augsburg's 1,089 total is its best-ever team finish for Augsburg at a 54-hole event, eclipsing last year's 1,092 total. Augsburg's final-round 347 was the fifth-best single-round score in school history.

Augsburg's seventh-place team out of 10 teams competing matched last year's team finish, and is also tied for the school's best-ever conference meet finish; the Auggies finished seventh out of eight teams in the 1997 conference meet.

Jill Ferguson (SO, Batavia, Ill.) finished in 29th place with a 277 (100-91-86) total, with her 277 total a collegiate personal-best 54-hole total, and her final-round 86 a collegiate personal-best round.

Megan Dale (SR, Northfield, Minn.) also set personal-bests in her final collegiate event, finishing 42nd with a 296 (105-99-92) total. Her 296 total for 54 holes and her final-round 92 were both collegiate personal-best scores.

Ashley Lindemann (FY, Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS) finished in 43rd place for the Auggies with a 302 (100-101-101) total.
