Message: Come celebrate Social Work Month with Tony Bibus! Staff and faculty are invited to enjoy a COMPLIMENTARY LUNCH courtesy of the Lilly Program as Prof. Bibus shares reflections on his life experiences—becoming a social worker, teaching social work, and finding a home at Augsburg College. He will explore the links between hope, health, help, and vocation—all in the spirit of Paul Tillich’s assertion that “there is no depth of life without the depth of the common life.”

The lunch will take place on FRIDAY, MARCH 30 from 12:10-1:15 PM in the Minneapolis Room-. Please register early! Space is limited!

To make your reservation, please call or e-mail Diane Glorvigen at x1334 or glorvige@augsburg.edu. (Deadline: Wednesday, March 28)

Faculty Scholarship Roundtables
Abstracts due March 30

On Thursday, April 19 we will host the Faculty Scholarship Roundtables. Please consider making a presentation in a roundtable setting on your current research, scholarship (broadly defined) and professional work. In particular, we hope this will become a forum for those recently returned from sabbatical (last fall and last spring) to share their learning with the campus; we hope to see most of you at this opportunity. Finally, this is a critical opportunity for all of us to model life long learning by attending these events and knowing what we are about as a college. Invitations to all are forthcoming. Abstract forms are available on the CTL webpage, CTL public folder or by calling x1229.

Sponsored by The Center for Teaching and Learning, The Office of Undergraduate Research and Graduate Opportunity, and The Fine Arts Office

Subject: Invitation to Design workshop series today
Submitter:
Theresa L Martin, Administrative Assistant, Center for Teaching and Learning

Message:

Four workshops intended to enable faculty to use a systematic, purposeful approach to revising, creating, and maintaining learning experiences. All workshops are offered twice and are scheduled from 3:30-5:00 PM in Lindell 301 unless otherwise posted (dates are indicated below).

Faculty considering applying for Instructional and Course Design support for Summer 2007 are encouraged to attend.

1) How did we learn to teach? March 14 and 14. Bring your resume’ and some examples of your best (and worst, if your dare!) teaching for an exploration of how we got here and who we learned our art from. We’ll explore our approaches to creating learning experiences, how we detect that something needs to be changed, and how we proceed to change them.

2) Teaching and Brain Science –ne’er the twain shall meet? March 27 and 28. Bring what you have come to believe about brain science and learning and compare it with what some current experts have to say. How do the various ways we teach work with or against brain function? What does brain science tell us about crafting learning environments and experiences that are efficient and produce durable results?

3) Brain science, ‘best practice’, and instructional design April 9 and 10. Bring your favorite ‘best practice’ guiding principles for an exploration of the relationship between these and brain science and how this can inform intentional choice in crafting learning experiences.

4) The designing professor: changing students on purpose April 24 and 25. Bring a learning experience you’ve been working on to dip your pedagogical toes into the waters of design. We’ll work with a process that starts by identifying the change(s) we want in our students and progresses systematically (but not too fast!) to creating experiences that not only change and empower students, but also enable us to develop a habit of reflective empathy in our work.

RSVP to martin@augsburg.edu or x1229.

MINNEAPOLIS (3/13/07) -- Augsburg College women's basketball player Kristina Lurken (Jr., Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo HS) was named as an honorable-mention selection to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball team, while Jacci Mattern (So., Lakeville, Minn.) was selected to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team, it was announced recently.

Lurken led the Auggies in scoring this season, averaging 11.6 points-per-game, while also contributing 5.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. Her assists-per-game totals were second-best among MIAC players in both overall statistics and league-games-only (4.23) statistics. She was 12th among league players in scoring in overall games and sixth in overall assist-to-turnover ratio (0.88). In league-games-only statistics, she was 14th in scoring (11.6 ppg) and sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (0.93).

Her 103 assists this season were the second-most in a single season in school history (the record is 130 by Terese Taylor in 1983-84), and the second straight year she has reached the century mark in the category. She now has 290 career assists, second-most in school history; the career record is 360 by Taylor from 1980-84. Lurken has started all 73 games in her three seasons at Augsburg, with 685 points (9.4 per-game), 106 steals and 369 rebounds (5.1 per-game).

Mattern was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the conference is establishing sportsmanship teams in each league sport. Members are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition.

Mattern averaged 3.7 points and 3.1 rebounds per-game this season, starting 16 of 21 games. In her two seasons, (46 games, 27 starts), she is averaging 4.0 points and 3.0 rebounds per-game. Also a starting outfielder on Augsburg's softball team, she earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors in 2006.

Under third-year head coach Jennifer Britz, Augsburg finished 1-24 overall, 1-21 in MIAC play in 2006-07. Augsburg's lineup was a young one, with only one senior and seven freshmen and sophomores. Nine letterwinners will return to the Auggies next season.

Message: Augsburg's Tiffany Magnuson named All-MIAC in women's hockey; Jackie Keller, Toni Menth named All-MIAC honorable mention

http://www.augsburg.edu/athletics/sportsnews/031207whockey.html

MINNEAPOLIS (3/12/07) -- Augsburg College women's hockey forward Tiffany Magnuson (So., Green Bay, Wis./Notre Dame Academy) was named to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's hockey team, while teammates Jackie Keller (Jr., Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS) and Toni Menth (Fr., Buffalo, Minn.) earned All-MIAC honorable-mention honors, it was announced recently. Keller was also selected to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

It is the second straight year that Magnuson was named to the All-MIAC team. Magnuson led the MIAC in overall goals (23) this season, while also contributing seven assists for 30 points (seventh-most among league players). Her 17 goals in league play were also tops among conference players, while her 20 points were tied for seventh-most. Nationally, her 0.92 goals-per-game average currently ranks second-highest among NCAA Division III players. She had at least one goal or assist in 19 of Augsburg's 25 games this season, and had multiple-point games nine times. She had multi-goal games five times, with a hat trick in Augsburg's 6-6 tie with St. Olaf on Dec. 2. She was named MIAC Player of the Week on Jan. 10, after Augsburg's nonconference sweep of Wesleyan (Conn.).

After two seasons at Augsburg (50 games), Magnuson has 44 career goals, already the third-most in school history, behind the 68 of Angie Rieger (1997-2001) and 55 of Lauren Chezick (2001-05). Her 23 goals this season is tied for third-most in a single-season in school history; the record is 27 goals, set by Rieger in the 1999-2000 season.

Keller finished third on the team, and tops among the team's defenders, in total scoring with one goal and a team-high 10 assists for 11 points. Her 11 points were eighth-highest among MIAC defenders this season, and her 10 points in league play (one goal, nine assists) were tied for sixth-best among league defenders. In her career (74 games) at Augsburg, Keller has four goals and 18 assists for 22 points.

Keller was also named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team. As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the conference is establishing sportsmanship teams in each league sport. Members are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the field of competition. As a women's soccer midfielder, Keller was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V second team this season. She is a psychology major with a 3.70 grade-point-average.

Menth played in all but one game in goal for the Auggies this season, building a 3.20 goals-against-average and .906 save percentage. She finished with an 8-11-5 record.

This season, Menth collected 30 or more saves in 15 of her 24 starts, with 40 or more saves in six games. She earned MIAC Player of the Week honors on Jan. 23, after stopping 70 of 76 shots she faced in a series split with St. Thomas.

Under 12th-year head coach Jill Pohtilla, Augsburg finished 8-12-5 overall, 5-9-4 in MIAC play in 2006-07. After starting the season winless in November and December (0-6-3), Augsburg went 8-6-2 the rest of the way, including a stretch of seven wins in nine games midway through the season. This year's team featured no seniors, and 12 letterwinners will return next year.
